The different classes all encourage a very different playstyle and is most notable when they're fighting each other. The magical abilities are useful, beautiful and range from an annoyance, to devestating. The abilities of each individual units make them feel fresh, even if they're just the same unit in a different race (Elven Archers are slightly different from Human Archers, which are different from Orc Razorbows, which are different from Goblin Blow darters)
#AGE OF WONDERS III CO OP MODE PRO#
The economics of the game is simple, this may be a pro or a con to you.īattles don't rely solely on "Who has the biggest murder stack" I've had 2 stacks of 6 (6 is max) get wiped out by 4 elite units. The race customization and uniqueness to each race is balanced but still requires you to keep a sharp mind. Probably doesn't help, I've never played HOMM but have played and greatly enjoyed AoW3. It keeps combat more dynamic trying to grow these units through the game. In the current map I'm playing I have a pair of High Elf Long bowmen units that have over 100 health each because they've successfully defended my capitol city so many times. Keep units with you for long enough, through enough battles and even beginning tier one units are valuable in the late game because of the abilities and stat increases they gain. I find it's pretty one dimensional in terms of how an army grows.Īge of Wonders has the advantage of an endless leveling up system. The AI still cheats like an asshat in Age of Wonders, but playing the long game against them even on the hardest difficulty is entirely viable.Īs far as combat goes HOMM has always been about creating huge murder stacks over time, and managing casualties to allow your murder stacks to grow quickly. Without comparing those games with Civilization, how do you guys perceive those two games in term of fairness, complexity and longevity? Now I remember in Heroes of might and magic II and III I could take my time exploring, growing and still beat an AI. People also claim that the best and often only strategy is to rush the AI down before it becomes unstoppable. I have read a lot of things about both games being "unfair": AI seeing whole map, having bonus resources, having bonus to armies, etc. This will serve as discussion as well as recommendation at the same time for me. Those 2 games had time to mature long enough to each become their respective definitive versions meaning most bugs fixed. However, My eyes turned towards Heroes of Might and Magic VI (with all expansions) and Age of Wonders III (with all expansions). I have Civilization V with the expansions, Endless Space, Sins of a Solar Empire (though I do not enjoy it as much as turn based strategy games).
